Laura Chapman While I don't necessarily believe in writer's block, I do believe in giving into the desire to be lazy from time to time. :) If I'm not on deadline, and my head feels like mush, I give myself permission to binge-watch Netflix or tackle my daunting to-read pile. But when I do have a deadline looming or just need to get serious about writing, I make time to write. I'll wake up early to give myself an hour and a half to write before work. I'll carve out time after work. And if I really feel myself needing structure, I'll pull out the egg timer (or the stopwatch on my cell phone) and order myself to write for 25 minutes--no distractions. (It's called the Pomodoro Technique if you'd like to look it up.) So basically, just write.
Laura Chapman Creating a new world of characters and imagining how they will interact with each other and in various situations. I could get lost in my head for hours imagining what my characters might say or do while eating breakfast or putting up a Christmas tree. Most of that won't ever make it into a book, but it's so much fun.
Laura Chapman Simple: Just do it. We all have a million obstacles and a million reasons why now isn't the perfect time to start writing. But if you have a story on your heart, and you feel a need to tell it, just write it. Remember, your characters depend on you to exist!
Laura Chapman I'm working on the first two books of what I imagine will be a four-part series. It involves football, which is all I'll say at this time. As a Nebraska girl, I was born and raised on Cornhusker football, so this has been a lot of fun to play homage to my roots.
Laura Chapman I'm inspired by reading great books. And by driving. I seem to get a lot of ideas and excitement to write in the car.
Laura Chapman My most recent published book is HARD HATS & DOORMATS, which came to me while I was on one of my first business trips in my first "real" job after college. The most recent book I've written (which is still in editing) came to me while I was drafting my first Fantasy Football team.
