Laurie Fraser Sleep on it and wake with a new idea. Always works.
Laurie Fraser This story is fiction but it's based on my experiences living in Turkey in the 90s. I married a carpet salesman (in a Muslim ceremony) and then learned that he was a Kurdish freedom fighter (PKK). To be fair, it's not the sort of thing you tell your girlfriend. Even his family didn't know.
I've always been a writer. When I was living that life in a Turkish village, coping with culture and politics and poverty, I thought :Finally! A book!
It was complicated and interesting enough to become a story with depth and layers...and some real suspense too.
But truly, the greatest motivation was the day I met a group of Kurdish refugees in East Turkey- their village had been burned by the Turkish Army. They'd moved to city but the money ran out and there was no work to be had. My husband and I found them in the middle of nowhere, nothing for miles around, in floor-less tents, without wood or food or water. I promised to tell their story.
The account is in The Word Not Spoken.
