The original idea for an artificial intelligence oriented book came to me many years ago when I saw the movie "2001 Space Odyssey" - where the computer, Hal, refused the astronauts' command to disconnect and then took over the spacecraft.

I think about the alternative ways of making a living - the way most people work - and I realize how fortunate and privileged I am to be a writer. Also, I don't believe you should wait more than an hour for inspiration to strike. If it doesn't come, you just have to sit down and write - or at least type.

My second novel, Death Logs In, will be released this week. I'm now working on my third novel, Death Logs Out.

Read a lot and pay attention to what the author is doing. Take some basic novel writing courses so that you are aware of the rules of fiction writing - even if you later decide to break them. Finally, write a lot, look for objective criticism and then hold your tongue and think about it before you discard it.

The ability to use my mind and imagination - and to be pretty much independent, not to have to answer to anyone - except of course, to my wife, my publicist and my readers.

It's just a matter of discipline; you can't wait for inspiration. I really think writer's block is more a function of procrastination, a desire for perfection, or some elitist writer's attitude that we need to be inspired in order to write. Very few people in life have the luxury of working only when they feel like it.
