On a personal note, who turned us in to child services and took my daughter away 19 years ago? Was it family, church members, what? That would make for a murder mystery. I have my own plans for the book following the one I'm engaged with right now. Sorry for the long reply.

Shift gears. There are no surefire ways, things that'll work for everyone. But it helps to distract yourself, loosen your personal logjam in mundane tasks; do the dishes, laundrey. My best thoughts come while I'm on the job, thinking of anything but the mind-numbing job I have to do at a given moment. Hope this was helpful.

I find I have too much time to think while I'm working, oftentimes while I'm online too. I'll read things that seem relevant & scribble notes while I'm in the act of reading. That's for a start.

I'm working on the follow-up to 'Butterfly & Serpent'. I was sitting on these stories a long time, and now I find myself throwing out most of my approaches & ideas while coming up with new ones. The book is turning out to be fresher and a better work for all that.

I love creating a whole other world, ie, in the sense that you're creating a life and building the community around them, from the bottom up. It's about the only place where you can truly be the master of your own destiny.

Don't go it alone. Be connected, whether through a local writer's group or Facebook--the best tool you can have is feedback from other writers. Don't make my mistake and start out alone.
