Read constantly. I became a better drummer by watching my superiors take their styles to the craft, and writing is no different.
Don't be afraid to fail. You will produce awful work that will make you recoil down the road. Practice is required, as with any other craft.

Writing fulfills some ego based need. As a reader, I enjoy the way a line of Shakespeare moves me. I take such pleasure when the comedian brings me to laughter, and a morbid satisfaction with the successful posturing of the satirist. Moments when I feel I could somehow contribute to the collective whole, I shudder in knowing how great the greats really are, while ego suggests they would smile upon my efforts.

Writer's block only exists for me when I have no story. That moment when a book has just been published and I start to think of what's next... that's when I'll get low. I have to still believe in an idea beyond a period of time to determine whether it's actually worth seeing through, or if I were excited because I'm desperate. It's during the plot outlining that I'll be stumped with where to take an idea. I don't have some magical answer beyond indulgence in the craft, a willingness to fail, and an eagerness to discard ideas you once loved.
