Red wine, coffee, and swimming (not in that order and usually not together)...
I usually get my best ideas in the pool, must be something about the serenity of it - the only challenge is writing them down as I'm trying to swim (I have a dry erase board on pool deck, that's been helpful)....

Being a writer, and having an outlet for expressing thoughts, especially when you find an idea in a moment of clarity/inspiration, is incredible. The chance to take a very simple thought and expand it into an entire novel, allowing that momentary expression to grow into something more permanent, is also such a rush. Combine that process with the chance to have an impact (ideally positive) on a reader and the feeling that someone might actually feel better, think harder, contemplate society at large, after reading one of my books, makes it all worthwhile.
Sometimes I might forget that simple fact, but I hope i never stop appreciating and striving for something more with this opportunity!
