Brian Fence The problem with a trilogy is that darn second book. I had an idea of what I wanted to do with number one and I know where book three ends. Book two is kind of the long stretch of an interstate highway, and making the transition was difficult; the climax and a lot of the self-exploration -- which is a driving part of book two -- came from a short story I wrote as a supplement to the first book.
Brian Fence I usually get my ideas in the shower, bath, or at night when I can't sleep. My own travels often provide me with ideas, too, especially for locations.
Brian Fence Book three of my fantasy trilogy, Lenna's Arc, and handling the final details for the publication of book two, APPRENTICE.

I'm also writing two short stories for some magazines.
Brian Fence Write. Write all the time. Make that writer's muscle: start with a word goal of something achievable, like 250 words a day. After you can do that with ease, up it to 500 words a day. Keep going until you can hit a comfortable pace that doesn't drain you (I average, in top form, about 2000-3000 words a day, but after that need a break). Sometimes you'll be a little under, sometimes you're over. But it's important to KEEP WRITING.
Brian Fence It's really cathartic; you can put as much or as little of yourself (and quirks) into characters and explore parts of you that you probably didn't know existed.
Brian Fence Writer's block is tricky, but I think the best way to avoid it -- or tackle it head on -- is to write ANYWAY, even if you think it's rubbish. Writing is like a muscle; the more you use it, the easier it is. And even if what you're writing isn't related to what you feel like you -should- be writing, you never know what it could turn into.
