When I wrote The Check Out, I was working in a grocery store. As one can imagine, they really aren't the most exciting places to work. I kept coming up with these crazy scenarios that could happen, just as a way of amusing myself. Eventually, I decided that it would make a great book and wrote it. I hope readers find it as entertaining as I did.

I spend long periods of time collecting various items in my head (or on scrap paper.) Sometimes it's images, sometimes phrases. Really, anything that I find interesting ends up in the pot. I stir them all around until something pulls it together in a meaningful story. I never really know when it will happen. Once I'm in the writing process, I stay on it until I'm done. That's all about planning and routine, rather than waiting for inspiration.

Read. Write. Edit. Repeat. Read all that you can, of as many different styles as you can. Do the same for writing. Edit things yourself, and then hand it off to someone else to edit. Do it all again. If you are going to try to make money at writing, do as much research as you can before you publish your work. It's really tough to do it, and you don't want to waste a penny on promotions that don't work.

I love learning, and having little adventures. Writing is the perfect excuse for doing both. I also love taking experiences and a life of crazy stories into some kind of order. Of course, there is a huge ego boost when someone tells you they like your book. So, I've got that going for me.

In addition to outlining my next novel, which I hope to begin writing in 2015, I have a number of film projects that are coming to fruition. I am currently writing two scripts, as well.

I was actually working in a grocery store at the time I wrote the book. I would frequently find myself daydreaming of crazy situations that could happen to make the job more interesting. Being a fan of exploitation films, I naturally envisioned the most outrageous scenarios. Those eventually worked themselves into the basis for this book.
