In my first book I had a fictitious order of monks, the Monks of St. Possent. A reader (well, several of them, actually) asked how they came to be, wanted to know more. They are shooters. A mash-up of traditional Catholic monks, eastern martial artists, and soldier's PSTD treatment facility. So I tried to imagine a scenario that would result in that, and wrote about it.

Look at current trends and extend them out to their logical conclusions. Look at all the stupid things politicians and their supporters do, or technologists, and ask non-rhetorically "what could go wrong, how can this be gamed?"

Write what you want because YOU like the story. But if you want to show it to anyone, get an editor, and grow a skin think enough to take all criticism that comes your way. If you want to sell enough to have a non-zero possibility of making money, listen to your editor. Oh, and keep your day job - you're going to need it.
