Vicki L. Weavil Read a lot. Read all types of books. The best way to learn to write (in my opinion) is to read, and consider why you like or don't like certain books. Consider what works for you and what does not and apply that to your own writing.
Also -- write the stories you MUST tell. Don't feel you have to follow trends, or that your unique idea has no market. Write from your heart, THEN use your head to learn to edit, revise, query, market, etc.
Vicki L. Weavil For CROWN OF ICE: Two years ago, I read several Twitter comments from agents and editors talking about retelling fairy tales from the villain's POV. I was looking for an idea for a Young Adult fantasy, so this sparked my interest in considering a retelling. "The Snow Queen" by Hans Christian Andersen was always one of my favorite fairy tales, and I thought a story from the Snow Queen's point-of-view would be a challenge--and I love challenges!
