Barbara Davis She woke in the dark, with the idea for a perfect scene in her head, but she was afaid to turn on the light and wake her husband, so she scribbled it all down by moonlight. In the morning, se couldn't read a word of her scribble. (a true-ish story, sadly)
Barbara Davis Outlander's Scotland! I would probably be burned at the stake like Gellis Duncan, but what the heck... ya gotta die from something!
Barbara Davis I'm afraid I am not at all familiar with LP Harley's work, so there is no intentional connection between my book and The Go-Between. Pure coincidence. :)
Barbara Davis Hi Penelope! We lived in Dover, New Hampshire, while I wrote that book and my husband and I just LOVE Boston, so I loved being able to include a specific building. I'm thrilled that you recognized the location! As for the name LOWELL, I wanted a name that suggested her family had been a wealthy founding family in the area.
Barbara Davis Hi Iliana,
I'm SO sorry to have missed this question! I've been dealing with some serious health issues with my husband over the past year, and sadly, some things have fallen through the cracks. If it isn't too late, I would LOVE to send you a signed copy of Echo or any other of my books. I also have copies in Romanian that I would LOVE a good home if you still read that language. If you're still interested, please email me at bdavisauthor@gmail.com
Barbara Davis Greg! I'm not sure what happened but this two yea old message just popped up in my feed! I'm so happy you enjoyed your giveaway! Which one was it, and did you like the end?
Barbara Davis So sorry I missed your message, Julie! I'm so pleased you've enjoyed my books. It's so kind of you to drop a line to let me know! As to chasing character names, they tend to choose themselves, often before I have a lot of the story fleshed out. They're just... there. Also, I've realized, of late that I have a LOT of character's whose names begin with L. Not sure why. And I've done it again, because the protagonist of my upcoming novel is "Lizzy!" Anyhoo, thanks for the kind words, and happy reading! ~ Barb
Barbara Davis So sorry I missed this message, Greg. Thank you so much for your kind words! It means so much to authors to hear back from readers!
Barbara Davis So sorry I missed your question, Cathy, and the answer is YES! I love German and Austrian wines!
Barbara Davis So sorry I didn't see this earlier, Lisa. I can't say how it works with all publishers, but in my case, with Penguin, they ask for my input very early in the process. They ask things like, if I want a person on the cover, or just a place. What story elements do I want the cover to convey? I give them a few ideas to start with, and then they come back with a few mock ups for me to weigh in on. Sometimes they hit it first time out of the gate as with The Wishing Tide. And then sometimes, we go back to the drawing board, as we did with Summer at Hideaway Key and we get there on the second go. Penguin's cover team is really the best in the biz, as far as I'm concerned.
Barbara Davis I am currently working on my third novel for Penguin, which is as yet untitled, and is due out in Sumer of 2015. It's a dual timeline story set on Florida's Gulf Coast, and deals with love, betrayal, and a vicious rivalry. And yes, it's as delicious as it sounds!
Barbara Davis Luckily, writer's block isn't usually a problem for me, but when it does rear it's head there are two things that usually get the juices flowing again. One is a long drive in the country. Not sure why this works, but it does. The other is an hour (or more) in my hot tub, which I have dubbed "The Think Tank." I take a white board and a marker in with me, (and usually some wine) and I just brainstorm. It usually works like a charm!
Barbara Davis Keep reading good books. Keep asking for feedback? Study your craft. And keep writing. PS - Don't be in a hurry! Good writing takes time and patience.
