Lexa Dudley I read Frenchmans Creek when I was younger and loved it. When I am down or feeling a need for a good romance I reread it. To me Dona Lady St Columb and the french pirate Jean-Benoit Aubery are a perfect romantic couple. Dona is unconventional, a rebel and Jean-Benoit dashing and romantic with a touch of prov ado what more could you ask for in fiction.
Lexa Dudley In the Whispering Wind the qualities of the main character are probably the ones I love the most. Kind, gentle, mischievous and thoughtful. But with a little of the devil may care about him. A bit like the man I'm married to!!!
Lexa Dudley I am working on another novel also set in Sardinia, but in 1855. The research has been great fun and I have met a lot of people who are more than willing to tell me stories from that time. A historical romance set at the critical time of the unity of Italy.
Lexa Dudley My dream as a writer is to be able to write the stories that I want to write and have people read them and enjoy them for what they are.
In the whispering wind I have portrayed two people who, in spite of difficulties, love each other, what ever the outcome.
Lexa Dudley Visiting Sardinia I met a lot of people from the island and was struck by how religious they are. Back in 1969 when I set the novel things were very strict.
Young men and women went out on the evening promenade; they could look at one another, smile, but never cross over to talk to each other.
So into this mix comes a married woman who falls in love with a local man. It is their relationship that I found interesting. I knew what the reaction of family and friends would be, which made the story for me.
Lexa Dudley I wanted to write about something that I love and feel passionate about, so Sardinia was the obvious answer. I find everything I want on the island to give me inspiration.
Lexa Dudley I am working on a novel again set in Sardinia, but in 1855 which has involved a lot of research which I have loved. I am lucky because so many people help me when I am down there with odd bits of information and customs.
Lexa Dudley There is no such word as can't. Write and write put it away and then take it out and reread, you will soon see the mistakes. Read it out aloud. Get a piece of software that reads your book to you. It is amazing how it helps. Don't give up I was 72 before I was published.
Lexa Dudley Writing is something I have always done in the form of a day to day diary. I have a jotting book which I always carry with me. I find it relaxing and love any research that has to go into the book. Disappearing into ones own world has to be a bonus.
Lexa Dudley I take the day off. Go for a walk with the dogs and try to forget about the book. I find coming back to it with a fresh mind helps. Being semi-retired makes it easier to take time off.!
