A few years ago, I discovered that I had Irish roots. It's odd to me that this was, more or less, a family secret. No one ever bothered to mention it until then. From what I've always known of the Irish, they're rather proud as a people, and I can't understand why there was never any Irish influence on my family - neither the mythology of the culture nor a Catholic exposure of any kind. It came up casually in conversation once, and never again. I suppose it bothers me that the Irish culture wasn't more prevalent in my upbringing, and I would like to learn about it, perhaps even figure out why there was so much secrecy involved to begin with. I've always loved Ireland as a country, and I would be thrilled to visit it sometime. At least, it makes more sense why I have felt drawn to Celtic music since I was a child. Claiming I now have Irish roots gives me a better perception of myself and my family, in any case. I would love to include it in one of my books at some point.

Cami washed the blood off her hands. A delicious shiver shifted through her as she recalled the knife's ease as it sank into the man's flesh.

I take a break from that work in progress, or writing in general, for a while. Sometimes I work on other stories if I have them on hand. Stepping away from the problem can provide some much needed clarity. For more information on what other steps to take, I've pre-scheduled an article related to this topic on my Writing in the Modern Age blog for August 25, 2017. http://marielavender.blogspot.com/

There are two projects, actually. One is a young adult mystery short story. The other is a romantic mystery collection, titled First Target. My new publisher is also working on releasing the second edition of Upon Your Return, my first historical romance novel.

Directions of the Heart was inspired by personal experience, and news stories in the media. It's a collection of four tales, and most of them relate to PTSD, just not the kind we usually hear about. Each novella details an emotional journey for the characters.

I get inspiration from real life, from the lives of the people around me and current events. I'd also like to think that my personal experiences are stored in a mass of chaos in my subconscious, then pop back out in different forms when I have story ideas.
