Devon Trevarrow Flaherty I'm tackling a sort of sideline project right now, and the idea comes straight from real life. There is a true family story which has come down on my husband's side of the family and which, after many years, got a new "chapter" a couple summers ago. It is a pet project which may only ever speak to the family itself, but I hope to have an illustrated children's book version of the story done this year. Most of my ideas come from daily life and news snippets that bounce around in my brain until they become something else, but this was much more direct of an influence.
Devon Trevarrow Flaherty I currently have a few projects in motion. The first is a fantasy novel, "The Journey of Clement Fancywater," about a 30-year-old orphan who falls down a rabbit hole into destiny. The second is a fantasy which was originally on Wattpad and which may, some day, become a TV script. Called "The Touch," it's about a town that has been decimated by a modern day King Midas, and a runaway who lands herself in the middle of the localized apocalyptic mess. The third project is one that I am actually continuing as I do some writing residencies this summer! This literary fiction novel has been in the works a long time (because I am, after all, a home school mom), and is titled "The Family Elephant's Jewels." It is about seven siblings making their way home for their mother's untimely death, and the secrets they uncover along the way. That's not completely it, but you'll think I'm crazy if I keep going.
Devon Trevarrow Flaherty Writing! It's my favorite thing. I want to do it all life long, and I plan to. I guess this is just another way of saying that the best thing about being a writer is getting to love my job. I also love it when I am able to scoop other artistic endeavors into the writing field, like illustrating, cooking, etc. I will love it, too, if writing facilitates travel, which I hope one day it will.
Devon Trevarrow Flaherty I don't believe in writer's block. You just have to set a pen to paper or your fingers to a keyboard and actually write. Anything. I find that what comes of these more disciplined and less inspired times is often great stuff... way better than I expect, anyways.
