Susan Imhoff Bird today, my answer is claire and henry from the time traveler's wife . . .
another day I might have a different answer!
claire and henry have such an intimate, sweet, soulful connection that is grounded in so many different levels of love ~ isn't this what many of us human beings wish to experience?
Susan Imhoff Bird I start pedaling my bike somewhere. or I go snowshoeing. or I drive away. it's all about finding a way to see everything from a different perspective: this frees me from the restriction of familiarity, and, apparently, reorders brain cells and waves. the result is always a fresh observation, an aha, a small slice of experience, or what pam houston calls a "glimmer," a sentence or two that will later unfold into something meaningful.
Susan Imhoff Bird write, write more, and keep writing. take classes, read our finest writers (you can't go wrong with wallace stegner and barry lopez), make writer friends, hang out in an independent bookstore, go outside, and go deeply within.
Susan Imhoff Bird for me, it's the feeling of being in a state of "flow." I think this happens for many of us when we're intensely involved in a passion: we lose connection with time, our surroundings, even superfluous physical sensations.
Susan Imhoff Bird I go outside: trees, creeks, mountains, wildlife, moss, lichen, leaves, flowers . . . a deep breath of crisp air fills me with passion for our world which translates, eventually, into words on paper.
Susan Imhoff Bird the idea to write a book about wolves actually came from my wonderful publishers, mark bailey and kirsten allen. we were able to travel together for some of the research, which was fabulous. we visited yellowstone and missoula, montana, together, and their curiosity inspired my own.
Susan Imhoff Bird I always have a number of projects going: I'm currently working on an op-ed piece about wolves, some research into wild horses in the west, and a revision of my book about humanitarian work in nepal. and blog posts and letters to friends!
