That's easy. By looking around the world today. My new novel (being announced soon!) grapples with the same challenges plaguing society: racism, immigration, mental health, sexuality.

Very excited to be nearing the end of the writing/querying stage for my work-in-progress, a novel that explores what it's like to live in an American city (and cities in many other Western countries) in this day and age. That means lots of laughs and tears, and social justice issues galore. Currently titled Beautiful and Terrible Things, I expect to be signing a publishing contract soon!

Some day it's the love of the craft - being able to structure a story in a way that hopefully resonates with readers. Other days it's the freedom to lose yourself in another world. And I guess best of all are the times a reader says your writing somehow touched or moved them.

I try to stop writing for the day/night with my next section already in my mind - usually even roughed out on the computer. If I know what I'm going to write next, then it's easy to get going again in the next session.

Find a topic you love and know at least a little more about than the average person, and write about it, whether it's a hobby, a career, a feeling or an experience.
