I started as a cub reporter with no excuses allowed for not meeting a deadline (we had linotype operators in those days waiting to get home for dinner). So for me the answer is to just park my gluteus in a chair and start typing. I can always go back and chuck what I wrote, but the very act of writing usually gets me into the flow and pretty soon the muses visit.

The freedom to imagine a story; the joy of losing oneself in the characters' progression; the high of simply typing what the characters tell you and realizing that you've just completed an entire chapter in one sitting; the satisfaction of wrapping up your story arc; the sheer delight of seeing your book in print; and the ultimate bliss of readers' loving your work.

Write! Simple as that. Place butt in chair and write. Don't self criticize. Writing is like any other endeavor. It takes lots and lots of practice to refine your art. BGut you will never refine it unless you actually sit down and write.

Marketing my books. I do have plans for another major historical novel, but I have to research it first. That can be a lengthy process... at least for me.

Storytelling is my passion, whether it is historical fiction or mainstream fiction (plus a couple of non-fiction books thrown into the mix). Once a storyline gets into my head it gnaws at me until I commit to writing. Then it is a pleasure- sometimes a painful pleasure- to get it down.

My most recent book, Qa'a, is the third book in my series The First Dynasty. The series starts with the very first King of a united Egypt. The second book continues with the ascension to the throne of the first ever woman King. Qa'a ends the trilogy with the last known King of the First Dynasty, so it was a natural for me to write it.
