Alice Addy My most recent novel is A Gift for Abigail Rose. It's my annual Christmas contribution. Last year, just before the holiday, I was standing in line at our local supermarket, listening to the canned Christmas tunes rocking the place, when I took note of the lady standing in the line, adjacent to my own. She was middle aged, I suppose, but looked much older than her years. There was such sadness in her eyes, as if she'd been hurt beyond repair. In her basket, I saw a package of English muffins and a single pear. A small box of Earl Grey tea was hiding in the corner. I wondered if that was all she needed, or was that all she was going to have? By the look of her, she needed a good square meal under her belt. It was then I started to think about all the women like her, facing the Christmas holidays alone. Sadly, Abigail's story is too common. Some say it is depressing; but I disagree. The ending is wonderful and magical and I know it's a truly possible miracle for us all.
Alice Addy I can only address those authors choosing to write fiction. I say, just do it. There's nothing to be frightened of. My one most important piece of advice is to stay true to your characters. Never force them to do or say anything false to their nature. If it doesn't ring true for them, it will not ring true to the reader. The only time I've ever had a problem with a story line, was when I was trying to have a character behave in a way totally foreign to his natural behavior. Enjoy bringing your characters to life and be courageous enough to share your stories with the public.
