It's a little late for this one, but I spent time re-reading Jack McDevitt and John Sandford, while exploring various nonfiction, the stoundout of which was Thinking Fast and Slow. Highly recommended.

I like Metauniverses, so I'd cheat. I'd like to have shadowwalking capabilities and explore Zelazny's Shadows of Amber and the Courts of Chaos.

It started as a short story where the characters took on legs, and grew until the lines between character and setting began to blur, but pieces of that story have come from pieces of different interests over the years. Writing for me is about throwing the kitchen sink into the story, then learning to cut out all the pieces of broken porcelain which might slash through the walls of the world I'm building.

Have a day job. Understand that to make money writing is to engage in business, and that may spoil the thing you love, if you write for the love of it. If you can do both, wonderful, but it's difficult to make money as a writer and write your own passionate project all at the same time.

By working in parallel. I tend to work multiple projects, so if one begins to bog down, I move to another, and then let my subconscious chew away on the primary work.
