Tim Easley One of the best pieces of advice I've read was in, believe it or not, the autobiography of R.L. Stine. To paraphrase, he said it is important to read a lot. So I would concur with that. Read a lot, especially if you aren't currently writing. Read styles, genres, authors you usually wouldn't. You can learn about different styles, dialogue phrasing, and descriptions. You can learn what kind of writer you want to be, and most importantly, what kind you don't.
Tim Easley I'm about to go on vacation so one of the books I will be taking is I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid. Heard it is a chilling book.
Tim Easley With White Picket, I got the idea from another book/TV series, Dexter. My feelings notwithstanding on how both ended, I thought about the character of Dexter, and how he had to hide who he really was to everyone. So, I made the leap, "What if Dexter Morgan had a bunch of neighbors just like him?" Thus, the base idea of White Picket was born.
