Inspiration comes from many places...things I've read, dreams, conversations overheard. Sometimes the thoughts come pouring in, other times they need to percolate in the back of my brain for a while and then, in quiet moments, they come together. Sometimes that happens at my keyboard, but other it might just as well be when I'm driving somewhere or walking the dogs. Times when my mind is distracted by simple things seem to free up creativity. I think every author is different, but I also think that the 'mindless' tasks in our lives (even washing dishes and doing laundry!) often let us open up our minds to the stories within.

'The Shell Keeper', and its sequel, 'A Road Back to Grace' (due out this fall), were both inspired but Anne Morrow Lindbergh's 'Gift from The Sea'.

The best thing for me is when I'm in the 'zone'. Everything else falls away and time flies. Add in that moment when I write something that's just the right word or scene, there's no other feeling like it!

It's not so much that I ever have writer's block. It's more that I need a little more time to percolate on something. When this happens it helps for me to get away from the manuscript--or at least the section of it- for a few days and give it some breathing room. Coming back with a fresh perspective makes a big difference and usually solves the problem.

I am currently writing the sequel to The Shell Keeper, entitled Keeping Faith. It's set in Colorado's wine country!
