I have learned one must not wait to be inspired, one must just get on with it! I shudder when I think of all the time wasted, waiting for the "right" time. We, as writers, need to create the right time, just as we create stories. Otherwise, at the end of the day, we have a lot of empty hours and even more empty pages!

I think it would be easy to cobble together lots of bits of ancient family lore, mix them liberally with poetic license and have the basics of a plot. Nothing in particular springs to my mind as an actual mystery in my life, but, oh, I would be interested in hearing the mysteries in other people's pasts.

She said she'd write a novel "one of these days". But, she never did.

Marcia Willett's Garden House tops my list, this summer. I also read Nancy Thayer's beach books, and Mary Kay Andrews. My favorite summer reading will always be Rosamunde Pilcher's Sleeping Tiger and Mary Stewart's Stormy Petrel. I re-read those two every year.

Don't stop to critique every sentence as you write it. Just keep going. I have read we should write as fast as we can, and I love that idea. Tweaking, editing, is such fun, but you have to create something before you can do that. If you don't feel like working on your current project, write a letter to a friend. Crafting those sentences will drive writer's block away.

I would love to spend some time in the English countryside of Marcia Willett's books. A hike near the moors, picnic on a riverbank, tea along the river. Yes, please!

Just do it. Make writing a priority, like a second job. Don't wait for a chance to write--make that chance, and make it regularly. Time flies.

Writing is the only way I know of to be Queen of the World, since the world is one I create. If I want it to rain, it rains. If I want a change a season--presto, it's autumn. I'd like to say I can control my characters, too, but they have ideas all their own and are a constant source of surprise.

The second title in my "Kirkwood Clues" cozy mystery series. Enjoying my return to the small town with Barbara and Amy.
