I had the idea of writing fiction for a long time, but thought it required much study and special education. Since I've been a "listening" specialist all my life, as a psychotherapist and life coach, I didn't realize that this is great training for one's ear, one's empathy, one's ability to tell stories. I can't speak for other aspiring novelists, but this served me well. The story of BEGUILED just wrote itself... in the 1st draft. But, after that, you have to have tremendous patience, perseverance, and get the help you need from the experts.

I'm mulling over writing my next historical fiction novel about a woman who was famous in her time but not known in ours. I'd love to be immersed in the research it takes to write, in creating the story entirely from my imagination, but contained by the times and the biography.

I have written about this on my blog, but the short answer is that it began with the idea of writing the story of the kind of life my mother could have had if she'd had the gumption. Which she didn't, so this is largely fictional with a few biographical markers about her life. It was great fun, researching and imagining a life for her.

I know this is commonly experienced by writers, but I love to write, even my blog posts, which you can find here on Goodreads. I especially love writing fiction, although I have to say that even when I was writing my doctoral dissertation years ago, I even got absorbed in that. But writing fiction is delicious. I get into Flow each time I sit down to write. Sorry, no tips about writer's block.
