Probably not this year. I've been working on something else lately...

Yet to be determined.

Yes, but not spy fiction at the moment.

I have no knowledge that it still exists. I pray that it doesn't. Only a monster could ever use such a thing on another living person.

>>Is that true? If so, I'm very sorry :(
Unfortunately, it is true. My younger son developed Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) when he was 18 months old and we spent several years fighting cancer. My son survived, but some of the children we met in the hospital were not so fortunate. Medical science has made great strides in defeating pediatric cancers; it will be a wonderful day when that entire family of diseases is wiped out.

As a general rule, I try to keep things as true-to-life as possible -- I based most of the action scenes and interrogations in Moscow Station on real events. In most cases, I can respond to someone saying, "that's unrealistic" with, "that actually happened" or "that's not nearly as crazy as [real historical event X]."
That said, I tried to make the tension level in Moscow Station more like that felt during the height of the Cold War, as opposed to what's really happening today.

Apologies for the late reply.
I actually don't read a lot of espionage fiction because, having worked in the business, it drives me crazy when they don't get those details right. I have trouble watching spy shows and movies for the same reason.
Tom Clancy did very well with the tradecraft aspects in The Cardinal of the Kremlin -- enough that I suspect someone was advising him. Frederick Forsyth's The Day of the Jackal is another good one; almost any of John Le Carre's early works as well.

Thanks for those suggestions. I've read Clancy although not that book and love Le Carre. Nice work on your own book, of course.

I wish I could visit all of those locations, but that's unfortunately not possible--I'm not selling *that* many books (yet, I hope). That said, I do interview people who've been to locations I haven't personally visited. For example, some good friends of mine have been to Beihei Park and the Fangshan Restaurant that I describe in Red Cell (they were kind enough to bring me back some copies of the menu). When I can't find anyone who's been to a particular location, I use several other resources to make my descriptions as accurate as possible. If I can't find at least several photographs of the location, I don't use it in my books.
I try to make my books accurate enough that a reader could use them as a guidebook when walking around the cities or inside the buildings I describe. All of the locations, etc that I mention are all real. You can look them up on a map or on Google Earth.

Just a fluke. No intentional dig.

:-) Thanks Wendee! Say hi to your family for me!
Yep, it's the third book in the Red Cell series. Ties up some story threads that have been running through the whole series and sets things up for another multi-book arc.

Harriet,
I don't have any immediate plans to write another book featuring China-- the Russians are the antagonists in the next novel (coming in Feb) and I'm still sifting through ideas for the next book after that. But I have no doubt that I'll come back around to China eventually. They've become too influential as a world power to ignore.
Regards,
Mark

Victor,
I'm glad you enjoyed Red Cell and Cold Shot. Yes, a third book is on the way--"The Fall of Moscow Station" is already up for pre-order on Amazon and will be released on 2 Feb next year.
