Nancy Omeara Ooh, difficult one. I remember getting the idea "what if hate were a monster, mean, green and ugly" and thinking - I could write a book about all the things that have been said to me on this hotline. And it grew from there - but took a long time to polish and shine so I thought others would want to read it.
Nancy Omeara I volunteered on a hotline for religious tolerance. A scholar told me I should write a book as scholars know that people who do are more expert than people who study. So I went for it. "The Cult Around the Corner" (actually an anti-cult label book) has been very, very well received.
Nancy Omeara A novel. (Agh!) I'm 35,000 words in and am driven to edit rather than keep writing.
Nancy Omeara Get a day job that you love as well. (I teach, I love it.) So you are living and enjoying your daily life and writing is icing on an already delicious cake.

Read "Chicken Soup for the Writer's Soul" or other stories from real writers. You're not alone in your struggle.

Persist. Be willing to change. Think of your readers first.
Nancy Omeara Feedback from others. Getting a comment that someone gained something from what you read is unbelievably rewarding. Makes you want to write more.
Nancy Omeara I am a talker. So I just attack the blank page like I'm telling a story to a friend. (Sometimes it's the cat trying to sit on my keyboard.) Of course, that kind of writing usually needs lots of editing. You can edit later. Tell the story
