Ooh, difficult one. I remember getting the idea "what if hate were a monster, mean, green and ugly" and thinking - I could write a book about all the things that have been said to me on this hotline. And it grew from there - but took a long time to polish and shine so I thought others would want to read it.

I volunteered on a hotline for religious tolerance. A scholar told me I should write a book as scholars know that people who do are more expert than people who study. So I went for it. "The Cult Around the Corner" (actually an anti-cult label book) has been very,very well received.

Get a day job that you love as well. (I teach, I love it.) So you are living and enjoying your daily life and writing is icing on an already delicious cake.

I am a talker. So I just attack the blank page like I'm telling a story to a friend. (Sometimes it's the cat trying to sit on my keyboard.) Of course, that kind of writing usually needs lots of editing. You can edit later. Tell the story
