Writer's block is really having an overly active editor in your head, especially when you attempt to write the first draft. This internal editor is like a little gremlin that criticizes all of your ideas before you even have a chance to put pen to paper. The gremlin is constantly saying that your ideas aren't any good even before you write them down and thereby acts like an internal censor. I suggest letting the writing flow, especially during the first draft. At this point, don't worry if its good enough. You can always go back and revise later.

Write what you have a passion for. You'll need that passion as you go through the rewrites.
Have people read drafts of your work who are perceptive readers and will give you honest, insightful feedback.
Be sure to review your manuscript closely for any copy editing errors before sending it to agents or having it independently published. Having a copy editor review your work isn't a bad idea.

I'm currently writing my second novel called The Golden Mask, which is set in Vienna during 1937 and 1938. The action takes place before, during, and after the Anschsluss.

Sometimes I have brainstorming sessions, in which I think of possible ideas for novels or scripts. Then I run the ideas past my wife, who is a writer herself and gives honest opinions. I thought of the idea for Northern Lights during one of these sessions.
