The alarm woke you up, which is strange because you normally beat the alarm by a few minutes, and you had been having the most wonderful dream about where you were in life, all of your accomplishments and your wonderful family. When you went to the bathroom, as you stood in front of the mirror and prepared to brush your teeth, you looked into a face you did not know and realized the room you woke up in was not the room where you had the beautiful dream.

That's a hard question. There are many fictional worlds I'd love to visit--but if I had to pick one, it would be Amber (from Zelazny's books). I would insist on being "of the blood" so I could walk in shadow--then I could choose an infinite number of worlds to visit.

I don't make reading lists. I had enough of reading lists when I was preparing for my candidacy exam. I like to select books through serendipity. I may reread an old favorite or chance upon something new and start it on the spur of the moment.

I don't really have any mysteries in my own life that could be a plot for a book. I think that's why authors oftern write books and people read them. We need to imagine the mystery, or at least a mystery that will take us out of our mundane world and into something different.
