Hi Lorena. Charivari is an old word meaning a kind of discordant parade, folks banging on pots and pans, etc., often to call out a newly wed couple, or to have some fun at someone's expense. In the circus charivari means the moment when the big top curtain opens and out flows the acrobats, liberty horses, etc, and they parade around the track.
The book came out of the poem I wrote (at the back of the book) that was inspired by the words and music of Tom Waits, who often writes about folks on the edges of society. Poetry spawned a novel!
