Rick Patterson My adopted African American daughter grew up believing that she was the "ugly one" compared to her lighter skinned sisters because "her lips were thicker, her hair was kinkier, her skin was darker and her nose was wider". This sense of an outward ugliness generates and inward self-hatred and shame and is what motivates and manipulates our lives enticing us into making self-destructive decisions we will later deeply regret.
