I lived for several years in Taos, NM, and thought Day of the Dead seemed a good time and Santa Fe a good place to set a mystery. Then all I had to do was come up with a story. :)

Write. Keep writing. Derriere in the chair. Every day--15 minutes. Rejection is part of the routine--understand that it's not always your work that they're rejecting--it might be something on their end. BUT you must also game your chances for being accepted--only submit to pubs for which your work is suited, and to which you think you stand a chance of being accepted. Don't think New Yorker Magazine or Granta are going to accept work from an unpublished writer. It doesn't work that way 99.9% of the time.
