M.A. Carson I love to write dialogue, so what inspires me is listening to conversations, both in real life and in movies and TV. Great dialogue has a natural rhythm, a beautiful back and forth flow. When I hear an interesting discussion, I want to write one of my own.
M.A. Carson You can write about anything. You're only limited by your own imagination. I'd love to make a movie, but that takes a lot of help and money. Writing allows me to release the ideas bubbling in my skull and share them with others. Nothing's more terrible than having a great idea and not being able to get it out.
M.A. Carson For writer's block, I'll start on a new project, sometimes that's another story, sometimes it's working on a cartoon or a cardboard sculpture. If you'd like to see these other projects, check out my website: macarson.com
M.A. Carson I'm currently working on a superhero novel, where the protagonist is a sidekick trying to escape his egotistical, spandex-clad hero.
M.A. Carson I would tell aspiring writers to never box yourself in. You have the chance to create your own world, with your own characters, and their own struggles. Don't let a genre limit your choices. Push the boundaries of an established genre. There are many romance stories, science fictions, and YA novels, don't be afraid to be different. Twist tropes. Flip cliches on their head. Explore your world and every avenue possible.
M.A. Carson At the time, the Twilight series was blowing up the big screen, and I was struck by how desirable turning into a vampire had become. No mob will chase you with pitchforks. You’ll be beautiful, ageless, strong, immortal, and not even sunlight will hurt you. Sign me up. What if a protagonist struggled with low self-esteem and a poor body image and saw the perfection of vampires as the only way to fix her flaws. Vampires as a cosmetic enhancement. I wanted to create a world where the fantasy elements of immortals and fangs collided with real-life issues of peer pressure and superficiality. I found that the two sides had a lot in common.
