Dreams. Seriously. Every one of my books has been derived from and inspired by dreams, snatches of dream or - in the case of Olives-A Violent Romance, I dreamed the whole damn book. Woke up with it in my head. My latest book, Birdkill, was a dream that turned into a short story which I wrote some 25 years ago and which has stayed with me all this time.

Write more. Oh, apparently that answer was too short. That's mildly ridiculous, being forced to write longer answers. My advice for aspiring writers is to write longer answers. There. Happy, Goodreads? 80,000 word answers are called books.

Creating worlds. Having characters run away on you and do stuff you hadn't expected or even wanted them to do. People enjoying your work.

It's such an uninspiring question. I usually go to sleep on the problem and 9/10 the solution's there the next day. But the key is just to keep writing, keep hammering at it. And stay away from Twitter.
