Often some minor incident will inspire me. I once read in the L.A. Times a story about an old cowboy in Nevada, who kills the town bully. He ends up going to Folsom Prison. He finds out his wife is dying and tries to get permission to visit her. From that small article I wrote my sixth novel, "Last Sunrise."

I'm research Hannibal Barca. A lot of books have been written about him, so I'm thinking of telling the story of his army crossing the Alps to fight Rome through the eyes of a boy who is forced into Hannibal's army.

I had read a couple books about James "Wild Bill" Hickok and found him not only a mythical man, but almost mystical. I love science fiction, so I thought, "What would happen if Wild Bill were to be cloned in the future?"
