Deborah Siddoway The one thing that still sometimes baffles me is why I stayed in my marriage for as long as I did. I often draw on the emotions stemming from the failure of my marriage in my writing, but sometimes, when I look back, I just cannot fathom why I let myself be convinced that I should stay.
Deborah Siddoway The idea for Dark Waters first came to me when I was on my way to a seminar on Charles Dickens and Urania Cottage, which was a home he founded with Angela Burdett Coutts for the reform of what he termed fallen women. I was walking along Emery Hill Street in London towards the bus stop when I felt someone touch the back of my neck. I turned to see who it was, but no one was there. In fact, no one was anywhere near me. As I tried to convince myself that I had imagined that feathery touch on the back of my neck, I wondered what any ghost would be doing on Emery Hill Street on a cold London evening. The germ of a story was beginning to infect me. The novel started from there.
