How did it feel to write this book?
Shannon Freeman Hi Miriam! It was amazing. It's my favorite that I've written to date. I love High School High because it was my first. Expecting for me is everything. I loved the girls in the story. I hope that comes across to the readers. They are each so unique, right along with their experiences.

I love how the stories flow so smoothly. Once you start reading it is hard to put your books down. My students may struggle with some vocabulary, but because your books are for struggling readers, they are able to grasp concepts they would not with other books. How are you able to do that with EVERY book?

Thanks for asking! I work closely with my editor to make sure that we have shortened sentences and vocabulary that is easily decodable for struggling readers.

How do you get inspired to write?
Shannon Freeman I am inspired by a good story. I love having others get involved in my storyline and that inspires me to type another day!

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
Shannon Freeman I have a total of ten books. My most recent book is still being written. It is called The Alternative. It is ripped from the pages of my life :)

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
Shannon Freeman My advice for aspiring writers is to write everyday. Always take time out for yourself. I started with twenty minutes a day which turned into an hour very quickly. Then, once you complete your first manuscript find an editor who is within your budget. You cannot only one critiquing your work. You will make mistakes. Then start submitting. Submit to every publisher that focuses on the type of content that you generate. Once you have done that, don't be discouraged by No's because it only takes one YES!

What’s the best thing about being a writer?
Shannon Freeman I looooove storytelling. Whether I am acting on stage, in my classroom acting out a play, telling a story, or writing one, I just love entertaining. Being a writer is like living out a dream, especially when people get involved in my storylines. My students and I talk about the stories so in depth that to an outsider, they would think that the characters are real people. Writing is everything.

How do you deal with writer’s block?
Shannon Freeman I brainstorm a lot. Whenever I feel blocked, I write out about three variations of the same story. I lead with the one that speaks to me the most. It has a way of developing all on its own.

What are you currently working on?
Shannon Freeman I am currently working on a new series called Summit Middle School. I'm in the revising stage of book one. You'll have to wait on the title for that one though ;)
