Kathy McIntosh I switch things up. Maybe take a walk, maybe read with a cup of tea or a glass of iced coffee. Try a short story or a blog post if the novel is where I'm stymied. But mostly, I work to forgive myself for being human and then try hard to get my butt in my chair and my brain back to work.
Kathy McIntosh I awoke expecting to find my Catahoula Leopard dog asleep beside the bed, but she was not in the bedroom, or the hall, or anywhere in the house. I stepped outside into the before dawn darkness, and my flashlight revealed her lying on the grass, chewing my only remaining high heels, tail thumping.
Kathy McIntosh Read, read, and read more! I've heard some new writers say they're too busy writing to read, but I believe that's a mistake. I've recently been trying to "read like a writer," picking out what elements I particularly love and those that irk me. It's hard for me, because I tend to get totally lost in the story world.
Kathy McIntosh I'm working on a mystery set in the Sonoran desert, my new home. It's about an eco-tour company.
Kathy McIntosh I read a story about an Oregon hog farmer who came to a very bad end. I wanted to write about wind farms and somehow putting a hog farm beside a wind turbine tickled my fancy, if not my sense of smell.
