Read a lot. Join a writer's group and get involved: enter contests, submit excerpts for round tables, find a critique partner. Read a lot. Endure feedback, even negative criticism. All readers are entitled to their own opinions, and not all of them are going to love your work. If someone has a criticism, look past your anger at what prompted them to note that issue. Read a lot. (noticing a trend, here?) Authoring isn't a hobby, it will be your career, whereas that thing you drive your car to every morning is just your day job. Immerse yourself wholeheartedly: nothing else will do.
