Ugh good question. I step away - do something for myself, or read someone else's work. I'm a strong advocate for multiple hobbies, so if I'm really in a rut, I switch gears and make soap for a while (one of my other hobbies). Sometimes it helps me personally to have a notebook and look at a physical piece of paper to write stuff down. I try not to be methodical about it - I write in the margins, in different handwriting, I circle and highlight... etc. In fact, my notebook method has spawned additional stories I didn't realize were in my head.

It was more of an inspiration of taking 3 existing stories that I love and blending them together in a meaningful and unique way!
