The fictional world in HOT TROPIC really is my favourite world, and - how good does it get?! - I traveled there and done all the things I love to do: swimming with marine wildlife in crystal tropical water, hanging out with islanders and doing their thing, poking around on islands. I guess every dream lifestyle has it's downsides, and the compromises involved in sailing through the tropics are enormous - that doesn't come out in the fiction side so much! - but well worth it.

I get inspired by nature, by the sensuality of being in the forest, on the hill, and especially on the beach, or even better, in the water. I am inspired by sensuality. The thinking part of my brain also gets inspired by ideas and thoughts, but that is secondary.

The HOT TROPIC series is all drawn from my sailing experiences through the South Pacific. All the island places and cultures that I write about are fiction drawn directly from those places. When you cross the South Pacific you have to do it in a timely way to avoid cyclone seasons, so there is always a reason to move on to the next island group. You get a snapshot of each place, soak up as much as you can, then (speaking for myself at least) break your heart leaving.... because you must. The serial aspect of the journey, these serial snapshots of different tropical land and seascapes and cultures is really what inspired the idea of a series of books...

I am currently working on a scene late in the second book in the HOT TROPIC series (which does not yet have a name)... It's all waterfall pools and dappled tropical light through the trees... mmmm...

There are lots of good things about being a writer.... i love time spent on my own, deep in my own thoughts, drawing on all the weird connections and creative impulses that spontaneously arise... I like the private/public aspect: writing is a very private activity, but the must leave you and go out into the unknown world... exciting! scary! i feel like I am sharing something truly of myself.

getting my bum on the seat and putting in the time regardless...
