Ruth Horowitz Write because you love to write, not because you expect to get published.
Ruth Horowitz I have a novel out on submission at the moment. The idea for it came from an entirely different book, which I never finished. In it, there was a scene in which a girl is walking through a park on her way home from school, and a girl she doesn't know is sitting on a park bench. This other girl is slightly older than the protagonist, and she's dressed outlandishly, and as the protagonist approaches, the girl on the bench says something mean to her. I got interested in who this other girl was...and the answer turned into its own novel.
Ruth Horowitz I read wonderful writing.
Ruth Horowitz I pretend that I'm not writing. If I don't know how to proceed with a scene, I'll open a new document and start typing something like, "I have no idea where to go with this scene. Maybe XX should happen next. And if that happened, maybe it would lead to YY. And that scene might involve ZZ." I type as fast as I can, putting down whatever comes to mind, and usually (but not always), I end up tricking myself into writing.
Ruth Horowitz Playing with words. I love language.
Ruth Horowitz I'm working on a middle grade novel. I have written picture books, books for emerging readers, and a novel for adults. But this is my first serious attempt at writing for older kids. The process is either super fun or total torture, depending on which day you ask.
