Rae Lowery I was watching The Truman Show and I started thinking about how it would be to have, not just one guy being fooled, but a whole community that didn't know they were being fooled. It grew from there.
Rae Lowery I had started writing novels so my kids had something to read, more or less. As they got older, they were reading things that were much darker, and they requested that I write something more appropriate for older teens, but not full of swearing or sex (not that I would have done that anyway, but still) so I took elements from books I enjoy and combined them into a book that kids could read but adults could also enjoy it.
Rae Lowery My children were doing book reports and complaining about what they had to read. They flippantly asked me to write a book (at that time I had been only writing short stories) so they could write their reports about MY books, and it just seemed like a great idea and I decided to give it a go. The books were so successful they turned into a series.
Rae Lowery Hmmmmm. I guess writers block is the most obvious answer. I was working on the 5th book in the Adventures of Charlie series (The Case of the Time Machine) and I ran out of things to say. Just flat could not finish the story. So it is only about half done, and I still can't think of how to finish it. Any ideas?
Rae Lowery Yes, and this is my favorite part about being an author. Meeting my fans helps me stay on the pulse of what they are interested in, and I truly love feeling connected to my audience. Book Signings are a great way to put my books into the hands of those who really want them!
Rae Lowery Funny you should ask! I have 11 children (no, that is not a typo, I really do have 11 kids) and a bunch of nieces and nephews. Of course, they all wanted to be made characters in my books when I started writing, so almost all of them make at least a short appearance in one or more of my books.
Rae Lowery At this point it is just on Kindle, but I have plans to make paperbacks available in the next couple of years or so. The Adventures of Charlie books are available in paperback.
Rae Lowery I loved mysteries; Encyclopedia Brown was my favorite. I also liked Judy Blume. Calvin and Hobbes, The Far Side, and Dave Barry were favorites as i got older.
Rae Lowery Sometimes I will be having a conversation and an idea will come to me, or I will be watching a movie or reading a book and my brain will start asking me questions that create book scenarios. My brain is always searching for new material, even when I am not paying attention.
Rae Lowery I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I really love interacting with my readers, and booksignings where I get to give away free books are my favorite way to do that. I don't have any plans to be in Washington in the near future, but if you know of someone planning an event, have them contact me and I will give it my best shot to be there. Hanging out with you guys is my favorite part of this job :)
Rae Lowery The main character from the Adventures of Charlie series is kind of like reading my journal as a kid. I was a bit of a wild one. But the Ascent From The Dome characters are just completely fictitious.
Rae Lowery Ascent From The Dome. I just submitted it yesterday so they might still be putting it up on the website.
Rae Lowery I had been watching The Truman Show and I started thinking about what it would be like if instead of only one person being fooled, it was an entire society that was born there and didn't know of any other way of life. It grew from there. When I watched "The Giver" I was interested in how similar my story was with the film.
Rae Lowery Sometimes I listen to music, or read something that was written by another author. I am also inspired by conversations, movies, and radio talk shows. Basically, I keep my eyes and ears open, and try to keep a little notebook with me to jot down ideas when they come to me.
Rae Lowery I just finished a novel called Ascent From The Dome. Originally I titled it "Dome" but then I found out that Steven King had recently written a book with that title, so I had to change mine. I have a free book giveaway going to promote the book, and this is the link:

“The Giver” meets “Divergent” with a little “Truman Show”. This is a fairly dark novel, but has no swearing, sex, or gratuitous violence. It's an adventure story in which a couple of teenagers create their own community. They have a huge dome built, and bring in pregnant women who are willing to give up their children for a price. As they grow older, those children make up the society in which the creators see nothing wrong with deceiving an entire population about its environment. As the creators grow older, things start to go wrong. This fantasy novel explores the very real emotions that erupt when agency and freedom are snatched away.
Rae Lowery Don't be afraid to get started. It is free to publish through Amazon.com if you create a book on Kindle. Also, swallow your pride and take advice from others without getting your feelings hurt. If they are a friend, and they probably are or you would not have asked for their help, they have your best interest at heart.
