My favorite fiction couple is Sam Vimes and Lady Sybil Vimes from Sir Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels.
Sam's full title is His Grace, His Excellency, The Duke of Ankh; Commander Sir Samuel Vimes. Lady Sybil's full name is Lady Sybil Deidre Olgivanna Vimes (née Ramkin).
Commander Vimes cannot be corrupted. He can't be bribed. He isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, but he knows when something isn't right, and he picks away at things until he uncovers the truth. He was a drunken disgrace who drank his pay until he cleaned himself up for Lady Sybil.
Lady Sybil is truly proud of Sam, and believes he is capable of anything. As a result, Sam became a better man, lifted up by her belief and support. Lady Sybil is the richest woman in Ankh-Morpork.
Sam also saved Lady Sybil from her reclusive life, spending all her time tending her swamp dragons. She pull him up from the gutter, and he pulled her out of the dragon shed.
Sam and Sybil are perfect for each other. Together, they each became more than they had been alone. To quote Sam, "He couldn't do better, but she couldn't do worse, so maybe it all balances out."

It's been a couple of years since I first had the idea. It sat on the back burner for a while. I was thinking about a "good guy" who has some unfortunate things happen to him, and the story grew from that.

Almost all of my writing comes from emotional responses to something. I hear something, or read something, or see something, and I have an emotional response. Something grows from that, and becomes a story.

I am working on another SciFi novel. I can't say much about it right now. My short story, "The Run of the Phoenix" (published under my pen name Nathaniel Phillips), is a chapter from the middle of this novel.

Don't give up. Don't expect to be a hit right away. My first novel, a SciFi mystery/thriller, was short on thrills and, in general, real crap. It was a start.

Readers. No question about it. Without readers, I wouldn't write.

I write. It doesn't have to be good. It doesn't even have to fit the current story. As I write, new ideas come to me. Sitting and looking at a blank page doesn't help.
