Todd Michael Cox "Moby-Dick." And a few random other things.
Todd Michael Cox A novel set in the days after a kaiju attack. Plus: editing a non-fiction book about a beloved dog, which should be out this year.
Todd Michael Cox I'm inspired by the works of others, not only writers but painters, filmmakers, sculptors, musicians, composers. One could do worse than read the entire collection of Paris Review interviews, to recognize how all those great writers went through everything you are going through. There is one by me now. I re-read those collections constantly, like a theologian continually going back to religious works.
Todd Michael Cox Read and write. A lot of both. Read what came before, the works which have stood the test of time. Read contemporary works only sparingly. Listen to the advice of older folks. Ignore the advice of older folks. Think hard about why you wish to do this. Focus on the writing, and never ever think about publishing. Your ultimate goal should not be publication, it should be to create the best story that you can... and then, when you realize you have failed to do so, to try again. Forget the reader. Write for yourself.
Todd Michael Cox The best thing about writing is the almost narcotic joy that comes when things go well. The worst part, of course, is the lead weight of despair when all is going badly, or not going at all. Still, like all art forms, it remains worth any risk involved to body (all that sitting) or spirit (all that uncertainty, all that doubt, all the judgement).
Todd Michael Cox A writer is only truly blocked by himself. Since I don't Cox-block, I do not suffer from it.
