Sydney Avey The Trials of Nellie Belle is based on the life of my great grandmother, who I knew only by reputation. She was a bit of a black sheep, so I put her on a literary stage and asked her to explain herself. She did so, brilliantly.

I inherited her short stories that featured independent-minded lawmen, enterprising women, hard working immigrants, a senator, a number of cads, and a cross-dresser--people I imagine she encountered in her days as the first female court reporter to travel the legal circuit in the Pacific Northwest. Some of the stories are cautionary, some are hilarious, all needed telling in the context of the life of a progressive woman, gainfully employed in respectable work, able to travel through life on her own.
Sydney Avey Mitford series author Jan Karon's Father Tim and Cynthia Kavanagh rate as a favorite duo of mine. They share a zest for life and sense of humor. independent yet supportive, they love and challenge each other. Rather than preaching their faith, they live it. Karon has given us a picture of a beautiful marital relationship that grows stronger through turmoil and triumph.
Sydney Avey Goodreads gets the ball rolling with a set of questions for authors to tackle. For me, writer's block is a prompt to go do something else, to engage in an activity to relax my mind and refire my imagination (or no activity at all). A yoga class, a hike in Yosemite, a walk on the beach, a movie or a play, any experience that helps me rest and refocus. My nemesis is marketing block! that requires a technology fast or foreign travel! In both cases, prayer is an excellent reset button.
