Out of My Head, On the Trail of Consciousness, began when I heard a guy at a conference say, There are no images in our heads, all our experience is outside of us, it is the things we see and hear and touch. The guy was Riccardo Manzotti. We became friends and spent years talking about his work on consciousness. At a certain point the book became inevitable.

I never seek inspiration. I simply wait for some subject to demand to be written about. Ideas will appear on the horizon. Some fade, some grow and grow until there's nothing you can do but start casting about for the first sentence.
