Stephen Michell So far one of the best things is hearing from a reader that they enjoyed something I wrote. They liked a character. A scene was thrilling for them. They thought the ideas were provocative. They wanted to read something more.
Stephen Michell I have recently finished a new novel set in 6th century Britain, reimagining the myth and life of King Arthur. More details coming soon.
Stephen Michell The same advice that everyone gives: write all the time. But not everything needs to be a short story or a poem or a novel. Simply write something.

When my older brother was learning to illustrate professionally, he would bring a sketchbook with him everywhere he went, and whenever he had a spare moment he would sketch the scene around him. The scenery, the people, any small detail that caught his eye. Learning to write is no different. Take a notepad with you always. If you're waiting at the bus stop, write about it. If you're waiting for class to start, write about it. If you're waiting for a date to arrive, write about it. Just write all the time. And read a lot.
Stephen Michell I take a break from the project that feels blocked, and I write something fun instead. I throw away the idea of writing well, I forget the goal of creating a full story, and I simply let my thoughts spill out onto the page.

Walking also helps.
