Kim Echlin The writer, Carol Shields, once challenged a creative writing class to write an answer to this question: "What is the thing that you think you cannot write about?" I think this may be the mystery--our hidden past lives, our secret hopes.
Kim Echlin Great question--It began more than a decade ago. Curiously, I was volunteering at a school in Honduras with a woman who is an independent documentary producer. As we were cleaning a supply cupboard, she told me about a piece she was working on in The Hague at the international courts. I was fascinated by the work, by the international hope and cooperation. This began a very long time of reading and learning about the new law that was being created--at least a decade. The turning point for writing fiction was meeting an activist in Sarajevo who talked to me about war survivors. She said, "Their memories should be our memories."
Kim Echlin Good to hear from you Amanda! It is be available in March 2021. Looking forward!
Kim Echlin Thanks for asking!

I am currently completing my new book, Speak, Silence. This is a novel that tells the story of a trial in The Hague. The International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) were set up to address war crimes, even as the war was going on. They were ground-breaking and give us hope for international justice.

This is a pleasurable part of publishing a book--deciding of the cover, seeing the pages, talking over details about the production. Each time it feels like a gift!

In this difficult international time, I think our shared creativity is as important as ever to give us all hope.
