Sikivu Hutchinson A play adaptation of "Rock 'n' Roll Heretic" and a short story for my podcast Sleep Dystopias https://sleepdystopia.podbean.com/
Sikivu Hutchinson I am a long time rock music enthusiast and, as of four years ago, amateur guitar player. I always wanted to play guitar as a teenager, but was discouraged due to there being no visible Black women role models who played, as well as the overwhelmingly white male-dominated rock music industry (despite rock's origins in Black musical artistry and dynamism). Years later, I discovered Rosetta Tharpe and became intrigued by her trajectory. The novel marries select aspects of her experiences with that of a fictitious older Black woman electric guitarist protagonist navigating the stress of fronting a band, regaining her footing in a shark-infested industry that pigeonholes her, losing her religion and challenging sexist, homophobic and white supremacist notions of Black women's creativity
Sikivu Hutchinson Integrate small burst of non-structured writing so the task is not overwhelming. For example, I often write on post-its and small pads while waiting in the car, in public spaces or during other "interstial" periods of downtime. In addition, developing character sketches and crafting mini-podcasts or recordings of dialogue can help get creative juices flowing. Reading previous work aloud is another strategy to facilitate diving back into revision or new writing
