My family and I took a day trip to Washington D.C. last summer. While walking down a side street I spotted a stray cat. It got my wheels turning about the things that cat must have seen in a big city. That question hung with me and led me to write Blair House Cat Mystery.

Music is a great motivator. I have gone through tons of music soundtracks and classical music when I write. If I'm working on a particular scene, the music will enhance the mood. Then if I go back to working on that scene a day or two later, listening to the same music will get my mind right back to where I left off.

Don't take rejection personally. Publishing is like dating. It only takes one "yes" from someone who believes in the same story that you do.

I like knowing that I can create something for another person to escape into. It is satisfying to know that you're creating a place for someone to get away from the stress of work or day-to-day activities.

I work in an odd way. I actually like having two manuscripts going at the same time. If I get stuck with a plot point on one story, I'll work on the other manuscript until I can work through the issue with the first manuscript. Also, sometimes it's good to switch how you write. I took two notebooks with me on a trip to Colorado one summer and it really energized my work on a book.

I think I liked seeing where the plot went. I don't plan my books. I don't use an outline. For this particular book, I was curious because the story took on a life of its own and led me in some unexpected ways.
