Liz Dean If I'm blocked, I hold very fast to the daily word count I've set for myself. I set up a reward scheme. (Finish this chapter, and you can have... chips, tea, a phone call.... ) If possible, I'll read - fiction, magazines - or watch TV for distraction, then get back to it. Sometimes lots of frequent breaks can help.
Liz Dean Don't compare yourself to other writers too much. Write anyway - you have a unique voice.
Liz Dean I'm currently finishing a two-year project, Tarot Switchwords. It began as a brief introduction to the concept of linking Switchwords, the words that activate the subconscious mind, with the major arcana - so readers can manifest the gifts of the cards after their tarot reading. But the book has grown, it's now around three times the length, and there's still more to say. Which is why I'm having trouble finishing it!
Liz Dean My inspiration comes from nosiness. I'm naturally curious about people and what motivates them. When I read tarot for clients, I'm interested in their questions, their perspective on life. I don't often get the 'Eureka!' moment; ideas and observations build gradually.
Liz Dean My latest book, The Ultimate Guide to Divination, came from a comment from my father. He told me, just a year or two ago, "You know, your Nana read tea leaves, and some of her sisters, too..." I've been fascinated with all things divinatory - tarot, tea cups, crystal balls, runes – since the age of eight. That's how the book began; this discovery, the link back to my family, which perhaps explains why I've been enchanted by predictive techniques most of my life.
